London: The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has barred Mian Waheed-ur-Rehman, a British solicitor of Pakistani origin based in London, from practicing as a lawyer in England and Wales, and has referred his case to the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal (SDT) in charges of professional misconduct.
Mian Waheed-ur-Rehman, a lawyer at M–R Solicitors LLP, is the legal representative of Ali Imran, son-in-law of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
According to reports, following an SRA investigation of 23 February 2024, publicly disclosed on 11 August 2024, Mian Waheed-ur-Rehman was charged with several serious charges, including:
Alleged failure to disclose connections and interests of clients investing in development projects.
Conflict of interest Allegedly acted despite a significant risk of conflict of interest.
Inadequate client advice Alleged failure to properly advise clients on investment risks and planning considerations
Supervision failures Alleged failure to provide adequate supervision to junior staff handling client matters.
According to media reports, the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal has decided that Mian Waheed-ur-Rehman has a case to answer and a formal hearing will be held to examine the evidence. It is important to note that these allegations remain unproven until the Tribunal reaches a final decision.
At the time of the alleged misconduct, Mian Wahid-ur-Rehman was practicing at M–R Solicitors LLP in South Woodford, London. The upcoming Tribunal hearing will provide him with an opportunity to present his defense, with the Tribunal carefully considering the evidence submitted by both the SRA and the respondent.
This case highlights the SRA’s commitment to upholding ethical standards in the legal profession and ensuring transparency and accountability in client representation. The legal community and the public will be following the outcome of the SDT proceedings closely.
