London: British police have launched an investigation into the tragic incident of dozens of graves being desecrated in Watford’s Carpenters Park Lawn Cemetery.
British police on Tuesday launched an investigation into the incident, which is being described as a hate crime against Islam.
85 graves in Watford’s Carpenters Park Lawn Cemetery were desecrated in the incident, many of which were of children and young people.
Hertfordshire Police said the desecration of the graves was discovered by a grieving family during a visit to the cemetery and is a “criminal act of damage” that has caused deep shock and distress to the local Muslim community.
Extra patrols are being carried out in the area as the investigation into the incident continues, and police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
Inspector Will Rogers of the British police confirmed that senior officers are working with community leaders to help the families affected.
He said that in the coming days, we will be holding further talks with the Muslim community, who will have been particularly affected by this horrific crime.
Carpenters Park Lawn Cemetery, although located in Watford, is owned and managed by Brent Council.
Council leader Mohammed Butt condemned the incident, calling it a possible act of Islamophobic hate crime.
Mohammed Butt said that it appears that Muslim graves have been targeted in what appears to be an Islamophobic hate crime.
“We stand with the families whose loved ones’ graves were desecrated, and we will replace the defaced gravestones as soon as the police investigation is complete, and restore the cemetery to a peaceful and memorable place,” he said.
Three Rivers District Council Conservative Councillor Abbas Mirali described the desecration of the graves as a “barbaric act” and said it had caused “tremendous distress to the bereaved families and profound shock to our entire community.”
