Gifts given to the bride on marriage are only the property of the wife, not the husband’s right: Supreme Court

Islamabad: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has clarified in a decision that all items given to the bride on the occasion of marriage, whether they are ‘dowry’ or ‘bridal gifts’, are her complete and unconditional property, on which neither the husband nor his relatives can make any claim.
The court has also said that if any gift is given to the groom or his family, it will not be considered as dowry.
This decision was given by a bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi in which a divorced woman claimed ‘dowry’ and ‘non-maintenance’ from her ex-husband.
