Karachi: In Karachi and Khairpur, police raided the sit-ins of lawyers protesting against the canal project, while angry protesters set a police mobile on fire in Karachi.
According to the British channel Dawn TV, a lawyer’s protest against the canal project was going on in the Gulshan-e-Hadeed Link Road area of Karachi. When the police reached there, a lawyer hit a policeman with a baton, after which the police started a lathi-charge on the lawyers.
The police demolished the protest camp set up by lawyers and nationalist parties on the National Highway Link Road area of Steel Town police station for the past 6 days.
The police dispersed the workers of nationalist parties present in the protest camp. During this, there was a scuffle between the police and the workers of the nationalist parties, in which MMC Advocate Zeeshan Ajmal Arain, a member of the Malir Bar, was also injured and was taken to an unknown location after being detained by the police.
The police detained several protesters and restored traffic on the national highway to and from Thatta, which had been closed due to the ongoing protests since April 22.
The lawyers’ community and workers of the nationalist party gathered again in large numbers against the police action and the detention of the protesters. The protesters started protesting and shouting slogans against the police and the protesters once again closed the national highway link road for traffic.
Meanwhile, a large contingent of police including SSP Malir Kashif Abbasi and RRF reached the spot. The police used water cannons and started shelling tear gas to disperse the protesters, but the protesters attacked the police with sticks and stones.
Clashes between protesters and police are ongoing at regular intervals and the area is looking like a battlefield. Protesters are throwing stones while police are firing tear gas and batons to disperse the protesters. The angry protesters also attacked a police mobile and set it on fire after vandalizing it.
The angry protesters also threw stones at several vehicles, including a water cannon. Several people have been injured in the clashes between protesters and police. The protesters are also demanding the removal of the protest camp, registration of a case against the police for torturing the protesters, and removal of the SSP and SHOs.
The protesting lawyers say that they want to intimidate the lawyers through force, which will never be allowed to happen. As of the last reports, the protesters have once again staged a protest sit-in on the Link Road and the protest is ongoing while a heavy contingent of police is present at another location.
