Quetta: Police fired tear gas and baton charges at government employees protesting for a salary increase in the budget in Quetta, resulting in injuries to several protesters.
On Tuesday, the police also arrested more than 68 protesters who were protesting.
Employees of provincial departments of Balochistan are protesting on the platform of the Grand Alliance against the non-increase in salaries and benefits in the provincial budget on a federal basis.
After the failure of negotiations, the employees locked down government offices and schools and announced the siege of the provincial assembly.
When the employees started marching towards the assembly on Tuesday morning, the police tried to stop them on Zarghun Road, after which a clash broke out.
Police dispersed the protesters with baton charges. Several government employees and journalists were injured due to alleged police violence.
The Balochistan Union of Journalists has condemned the violence against journalists and demanded the arrest of the police personnel involved.
After the protesters dispersed, they spread to different areas of the city. During this, clashes started between police personnel and protesters on Jinnah Road, Circular Road and Manan Chowk.
Due to the heavy shelling of tear gas, the city began to present a scene of a battlefield. Not only the protesters but also the passers-by were affected by the shelling of tear gas.
The protesters also threw the thrown tear gas shells back at the police personnel, which worsened the condition of several personnel.
