Islamabad: The Supreme Court has accepted the appeal of the accused in a 34-year-old murder case. The apex court, in its judgment, has stressed reforms in the judicial system and said in its remarks that it seems that the criminal justice system is exploited by powerful and influential people.

Supreme Court Justice Athar Minallah issued a 20-page written decision on the appeal of the accused named in a 34-year-old murder case.

The decision has said that the punishment that a prisoner has to endure due to a weak, failed and compromised justice system is neither legal nor justified.

The court observed that the most vulnerable to delay in justice are those who are financially weak and cannot even afford to hire a lawyer of their choice.

The judgment further stated that the criminal justice system, from investigation to appeal hearing, appears to be vulnerable to exploitation by the powerful and influential.

The Supreme Court has also emphasized that a weak and compromised justice system undermines the rule of law, which promotes corruption, authoritarianism and the rule of the powerful class.

According to the judgment, a criminal justice system free from political interference and corruption is a fundamental right of every citizen.
