Karachi: The murder case of renowned lawyer Khawaja Shamsul Islam in Defense Phase 6 is rapidly approaching its resolution. CCTV footage of the incident and the confessional statement of the accused have further clarified the details of the incident.
According to police sources, the murder was the result of old enmity and personal revenge. But a surprising development came to light when one of the accused named in the case claimed that renowned cricketer Shahid Afridi had reconciled the deceased Shamsul Islam and his alleged killer.
According to the police, Khawaja Shamsul Islam was shot dead as he was leaving the mosque in Khayaban-e-Rahat after prayers. Khawaja Shamsul Islam died on the spot in the firing, while his son Daniyal and another worshipper were injured. The accused can be clearly seen in the CCTV footage firing and escaping from the back door of the mosque. After the incident, the accused said loudly, ‘I have avenged the murder of my father.’
A case of the incident has been registered at Darakhshan police station on the complaint of the deceased’s brother Khawaja Faisal. Case number 593/2025 includes provisions of murder, attempt to murder and anti-terrorism. According to the FIR, Khawaja Shamsul Islam was coming down from the mosque with his son after the funeral when the attacker suddenly fired two shots. One shot hit Khawaja Shamsul Islam, and the other hit his son, while the accused escaped by taking advantage of the crowd.
The turning point in the incident came when the video statement of the accused Imran Afridi came to light, in which he confessed that Khawaja Shamsul Islam had allegedly killed his father after kidnapping him. According to Imran Afridi, there was a transaction of Rs 3.5 million between his father and Shamsul Islam, which turned into a dispute. In the statement, the accused said that Shamsul Islam had false cases filed against his brothers, implicated women in the cases, and when justice was not served, he decided to kill them.
The accused clarified that none of his relatives or friends had any role in the incident, and that law enforcement agencies should not harass these people.
On the other hand, a video statement of a police officer and nominee in the incident, Taqdeer Afridi, has also emerged, in which he claimed that he had never been suspended in his 21-year police service and had no criminal record. Taqdeer Afridi alleged that Khawaja Shamsul Islam raided his house twice, charged him with terrorism charges, and tried to drag his women into the cases.
According to Taqdeer Afridi, former Pakistan cricket team captain Shahid Afridi was also active in reconciling Shamsul Islam and Imran Afridi, and on March 20, 2025, the matter was settled between the two parties due to his efforts.
According to Taqdeer Afridi, in the settlement, it was decided to pay blood money on behalf of Khwaja Shamsul Islam and Imran Afridi to withdraw his father’s case. However, despite this agreement, legal proceedings continued on behalf of Shamsul Islam, which made the situation serious again.
Taqdeer Afridi said that despite being innocent, Khwaja Shamsul Islam raided my house twice. Khwaja Shamsul Islam filed terrorism charges in the FIR of the dispute on November 14, 2024, and tried to get our women nominated in this FIR by extracting our family tree.
Taqdeer Afridi said that Khwaja Shamsul Islam kept forcibly naming innocent people in the FIR of the dispute. We have been subjected to so much abuse, but we have not been able to get justice from anywhere.
Police officials say that Khwaja Shamsul Islam was attacked a few months ago in which he was injury.
