Lahore: After India released water into the rivers, the flood situation in the Sutlej, Ravi and Chenab rivers of Punjab took a serious turn.
There is a very high level of flood in the Chenab River. The district administration blew up two dams of the Chenab River to save Head Qadirabad. According to the Commissioner of Gujranwala, the first crack was made at Mandi Bahauddin, while the second was made at Alipur Chatha in Gujranwala district. Residents along the banks of the Chenab from Qadirabad to Pindi Bhattian have been asked to evacuate as soon as possible.
Indian warning
India has also issued a warning of further floods in the rivers, and the Indian High Commission has informed in this regard.
The Sutlej River may enter from Ferozepur, and the Ravi from Madhupur. The Chenab is expected to enter from Akhnoor.
High-level flooding is possible in all three rivers. The Indus Water Commission has issued a flood alert in India.
Floods have wreaked havoc in several areas of Punjab, inundating hundreds of villages. Due to extremely high levels of flooding in Punjab, the Pakistan Army has also been called in to help the district administration.
The Army was called in for the 8 districts of Punjab
The army has also been called in for the Hafizabad district due to the flood situation.
This is the eighth district of Punjab where military forces have been deployed for relief activities at the request of the district administration.
So far, the army has been called in for relief activities in Lahore, Kasur, Sialkot, Narowal, Faisalabad, Okara, Sargodha and Hafizabad.
DGP PDMA Punjab Briefing
DGP PDMA Punjab says that the next 48 hours are very critical for Ravi and Chenab; however, the current spell of rains is ending, and relatively less rains are predicted in the coming days.
DG Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Irfan Ali Kathia, while giving a briefing on the flood situation, said that the structure of Head Marala is safe and the rail passing through there is now moving downwards through Khanki Head Works. According to him, it is hoped that this rail will reach Panjnad without any major damage.
He said that the water flow in the Ravi River at Jasr was recorded at 210,000 cusecs, which will pass through nearby areas between 9 and 10 pm tonight. The capacity of Shahdara Barrage near Lahore is 250,000 cusecs, and an estimated 180,000 to 90,000 cusecs of water is expected to pass through there.
Ravi River
India released 200,000 cusecs of water into the Ravi River. After continuous rains, the Ravi, Chenab and Sutlej rivers overflowed. There is a very high level of flood in the Ravi River. An alert was issued due to the fear of flooding in the low-lying areas of Shahdara.
There is also a very high level of flood in the Ravi River at Jasar, and the water flow has been recorded at 229,700 cusecs. The flood relay in the Ravi River poses a risk of flooding in the low-lying areas of Shahdara and Motorway 2.
In Narowal, the water of the Ravi River has entered the Kartarpur Corridor. There is a risk of severe damage to the Sikh place of worship, the water in the Gurudwara is 5 to 7 feet, Narowal Road has also been flooded, and the Shakargarh Highway is also closed for traffic.
A crack has appeared in the dam at the Shakargarh Bheko Chak location in the Ravi River, due to which several villages have been submerged. People are being evacuated from the affected villages. 21 people trapped in the water have been rescued in the Jarmian Jhande area of Shakargarh village.
The water flow in the Ravi River is continuously increasing; in view of the situation, the Civil Defense has issued an alert, while sirens have also been sounded.
Sutlej River
On the other hand, the Sutlej River has also overflowed, the water flow at Hedganda Singh has been recorded at 2 lakh 45 thousand cusecs.
Due to the further rise in the water level at Bahawalnagar in the Sutlej River, land connectivity of many villages has been cut off. There is a risk of high-level flooding at Head Sulemanki. Rescue operations by Rangers, the army and the police are underway in the affected areas. Thousands of people and livestock have been shifted to safe places.
Due to severe flooding in the Sutlej River at Arifwala, the areas of Kandshams, Kandaqbal, and Balari Kasuria were submerged in water. Many small and large settlements were surrounded by floodwater.
In Pakpattan, a rail of one lakh cusecs is passing at Baba Farid Bridge in the Sutlej River, due to which an emergency alert has been issued. Announcements are being made in mosques to evacuate the river belt.
More than 100 small and large settlements are affected by the flood in Pakpattan. More than 4,000 victims have been shifted to safe places due to the flood. Land connectivity of many villages has been cut off due to the flood.
Due to the flood in the Sutlej River, 30 villages in the border area have been submerged.
River Chenab
In addition, there is a very high level of flood in the Chenab River, and the land connection of many villages has been cut off.
The water level has risen at Head Khanki in Wazirabad, the flow has reached 7 lakh 5 thousand cusecs, the water level at Chenab Nagar in the Chenab River has started rising continuously, and the flow of water in the Chenab River has been recorded at 1 lakh 13 thousand cusecs.
According to the district administration, the flood rail running at 7 lakh cusecs from Head Marala has started entering the limits of Chenab Nagar, Chenab.
