London: Anti-India and anti-Prime Minister Narendra Modi slogans were written on the historic statue of Mahatma Gandhi, to which the Indian High Commission has strongly reacted.

The incident took place in London’s Tavistock Square, where the bronze statue of Gandhi is installed. The incident took place just a few days before the annual Gandhi Jayanti celebrations, which are celebrated at the same venue on October 2.

The anti-slogans were written on the pedestal of the statue, which the Indian High Commission strongly condemned and immediately informed the local authorities. The commission said in its social media statement that “We are deeply saddened by this shameful act with the statue of Gandhiji in London, which we strongly condemn.”

Every year, Gandhi Jayanti is also celebrated as the United Nations’ “International Day of Non-Violence”. On this occasion, flowers are offered to the statue and Gandhi’s favorite hymns are sung.

It should be noted that this statue was made with the help of the India League in 1968 and installed in Tavistock Square. The Metropolitan Police and Camden Council have launched an investigation into the incident.
