Drinking water ban in North Yorkshire, England

Staff reporter, Daily Dawn, Dawn TV report

Nidderdale: Residents in Nidderdale, North Yorkshire, England, have been advised not to drink tap water under any circumstances, even after boiling, after water samples have been found to contain contaminants.

According to a spokesperson for Yorkshire Water Company, chemical and physical changes have been observed in the water in 34 homes near Harrogate. The affected areas include Darley, Maynooth Hill, Birstall, High Birstwith, Forest Moor, Fellscliffe and Lofthouse.

The spokesperson said that the “boil before drinking” advice is still in place for another 43 homes; however, residents of these 34 homes have been strictly advised not to use the tap water for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth or watering pets. However, the water has been declared safe for washing clothes, cleaning dishes, bathing and flushing toilets.

Residents in the affected areas are being supplied with bottled water by the company. A resident said he received a call from the company on Friday night, informing him that the water was not drinkable even after boiling. According to him, by the end of the week, he was supplied with about 64 liters of water, but the reasons for the contamination are not yet clear.

A spokesman for Yorkshire Water said that during routine sampling on October 10, low levels of coliform bacteria were found in the water, which belongs to the group of bacteria such as E. coli and can be dangerous for children, the elderly and the vulnerable.

According to the company, measures such as cleaning the network, installing protective walls and conducting additional tests are being taken. Recent tests have shown chemical imbalances in some areas, after which strict instructions have been issued to affected households.

The spokesperson added that investigations are ongoing and initial evidence suggests the issue may be linked to rural areas where Yorkshire Water also has a private borehole supply. The company thanked customers for their cooperation and said it was working to restore water supplies as soon as possible.
