London: A woman in the UK, whose husband is facing serious charges of drugging her for the past 13 years, has been hailed as a local hero for helping to recover the body of a missing man from a river.
Joan Young, 48, decided to reveal her identity after six people, including her ex-husband, were charged with a total of 56 sexual offences against her. The charges include rape, sexual assault and other serious offences.
Joan Young was awarded a special honour by the chief officer in September for her volunteer work with the Wiltshire Search and Rescue Team. She showed extraordinary bravery with two other volunteers while recovering the body of a missing man from the River Avon in June.
According to police, it could have taken several hours for a special diving team to recover the body, but Joan Young and her colleagues took action themselves and pulled the body from the river.
Joan’s ex-husband, Philip Young, is accused of drugging his wife, possessing pornography and possessing indecent images of children between 2010 and 2023. Five other suspects have also been charged with various types of sex crimes.
All the suspects have been granted conditional bail, while the main suspect, Philip Young, remains in custody. All will appear at Swindon Crown Court in January. The victim is being provided with full protection and support by a special police team.
