Brussels: The International Crisis Group (ICG) says that Pakistan is the most affected country after the Taliban took power in Afghanistan in 2021. According to the organization, although the ceasefire is currently in place, Islamabad may attack again if the militants continue to carry out operations.

The Brussels-based independent and non-profit think tank, founded by prominent international figures, has said in its latest report that relations between the two countries have deteriorated severely, the main reason for which is the Afghan Taliban’s refusal to take action against the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.

A recent report by the International Crisis Group (ICG) said that Pakistan has emerged as the most affected country since the Taliban took over Afghanistan in 2021. According to the report, although a fragile ceasefire is currently in place between the two countries, Pakistan could resume cross-border operations if militant attacks continue.

According to the Brussels-based independent think tank, the main reason for the tension in Pakistan-Afghanistan relations is the lack of effective action by the Afghan Taliban against the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). There has been a significant increase in terrorist incidents in Pakistan since 2022, with most of the attacks occurring in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

The report said that Pakistan blames the outlawed TTP for these attacks, while some Baloch rebel groups have also been accused of external support. According to UN monitors, the TTP is supported by the Taliban, but the Taliban denies this.

The ICG has warned that if there is any sign of a major attack from Afghanistan in the future, Pakistan could once again respond with a strong military response, which could further escalate tensions in the region.
