Washington: Pakistan has contacted the State Department for clarification after reports of possible travel restrictions on entry to the US.
A report by ‘Reuters’ last week said that Pakistan could also be included in the list of countries whose citizens will be barred from entering the US.
A report published in the ‘New York Times’ later said that Pakistanis would not face a complete travel ban, but they may have to undergo ‘additional vetting’ while applying for visas.
Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, told Dawn Media that “we are in touch with the State Department, but no information has been shared so far.”
Earlier this week, the New York Times reported that Pakistan could be placed in the “orange” category, under which restrictions would be imposed on certain types of visas.
Countries in this category would only be eligible for visas such as business travel for wealthy individuals, but not for immigrants or tourists. The duration of these visas could also be reduced and applicants would be required to attend a personal interview.
Asked about Pakistan’s possible placement in this category, Ambassador Rizwan Saeed Sheikh said that it is currently based on “news”, nothing has come out officially so far, and we are still waiting for confirmation.
