London: Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has opened Pandora’s box of umpire fixing.

An interview with former Indian opening batsman Virender Sehwag has come to light in which he allegedly admits to bribing umpires to get decisions made in his favor. During this conversation, he named two umpires, both of whom have passed away.

In a clip that surfaced on social media, Sehwag said that there was a South African umpire named Rudy Koetzen. During a match, Sachin Tendulkar and I wore pads from the same company. Koetzen asked me where I could buy these pads. I asked why I wanted them. He said I wanted them for my son.

Sehwag said that after the match, I gave them my pads. The umpire thanked me and said how can I take them? I said it was a gift for your son. He asked me what I could do for him. I said, “Just don’t give me out once.” He didn’t give me out 2 or 3 times.

Sehwag further said that one such umpire was David Shepherd. While umpiring in India, I asked him how he felt about our hospitality. He said that I did not get ice cream. The caterers are forbidding me. During the game, I took a break and told the caterer that if the umpire did not get vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream during the break, then your job was over.

The former Indian player said that the umpire went inside during the break and when he came back, I asked how the ice cream was. He said, how did you know? I said that I had made the arrangements. To this, he asked what I could do for you. I said, just don’t give me out once.
