JAKARTA: The Malaysian state of Terengganu has announced that men who do not perform Friday prayers without any Islamic excuse can be punished with two years in prison or a fine of 3,000 ringgit (about 200,000 Pakistani rupees). This announcement was made this week in the province governed by the Malaysian Islamic Party (PSA).
According to state officials, now skipping Friday prayers even once will be considered a crime, which can be punished with imprisonment, fine or both. Earlier, action was taken under the law for missing Friday prayers three times, but now the rules have been tightened.
The Tarnakano administration says that action against those who skip Friday prayers will be taken through public reports or government patrols. On this occasion, State Executive Council member Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi explained that it is necessary to remind the public before punishment because Friday prayers are not just a religious duty but a symbol of unity and obedience among Muslims.
He added that punishments will only be given to those who avoid performing Friday prayers despite reminders.
