Washington: An unusual and controversial move has come to light in the United States: a limited-edition passport has been announced that will include a photo of current US President Donald Trump and his golden signature. This announcement was made on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of America’s independence.
The US State Department announced that it is preparing to issue a limited number of commemorative passports to mark the 250th anniversary of America,
which will have President Donald Trump’s photo on it. If this happens, he will be the first living president whose photo will be published on a travel document. According to American media, the concept of this special passport, which also includes a sketch of Trump with a serious expression, was under consideration for several months and was finally approved.
The new passports, in quantities of 25,000 to 30,000, will be available to applicants at the Washington, D.C., passport office shortly before Independence Day, July 4. Officials say the commemorative passports will be the documents for those who apply in person at the Washington office.
A prototype of the new passport was unveiled at a ceremony in Washington, showing Trump’s portrait against the backdrop of the Declaration of Independence.
Another design features a historic painting of the Founding Fathers. Officials say the special passports will be available only in the capital for a limited time and will not be subject to any additional fees.
The announcement has sparked a backlash in political circles. Opposition leaders have called the move a personal promotion by the president, saying that using state resources for personal purposes is against democratic values.
Critics say that it is rare for a sitting head of government to be featured on a passport in a democracy.
Interestingly, most countries in the world feature natural landscapes, historical heritage, or national symbols on their passports. Even some hardline countries prefer other symbols of national identity instead of pictures of their leaders. The current US passport also includes symbols such as the moon landing and the Statue of Liberty.
