London: Britain, Australia and Canada on Sunday recognized the Palestinian state, which is being called a major shift in Western foreign policy after decades, and this decision has come under strong reaction from Israel.
Portugal is also going to recognize the Palestinian state on Sunday, while the ongoing war in Gaza is witnessing an unprecedented increase in global pressure on Israel. This war began after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.
“Today, in a bid to revive hope for peace and a two-state solution for Palestinians and Israelis, the UK has formally recognised the state of Palestine,” British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on social media on Sunday.
Britain and Canada have become the first G7 countries to recognise a Palestinian state, with France and others expected to follow suit at the annual UN General Assembly session starting in New York on Monday.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, in recognising the state of Palestine, said his country was working with other major Western powers to increase pressure on Israel to end the war in Gaza.
“Canada recognizes the State of Palestine and offers to partner in building a peaceful future for both the State of Palestine and the State of Israel,” he said in a message on X.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also announced that Australia had “formally recognized the free and sovereign State of Palestine.”
“Australia recognizes the legitimate and long-standing aspirations of the Palestinian people for their own independent state,” he said in a statement. “Today’s move reflects Australia’s long-standing commitment to the two-state solution, which has always been the only path to lasting peace and security for the Israeli and Palestinian peoples.”
