Islamabad: 816 flights operated with 1 passenger, 302 flights operated with 2 passengers. PIA’s performance questioned by the media. It has been revealed that the national airline PIA is running ineffective flight operations from Islamabad International Airport, where hundreds of flights were dispatched to domestic and foreign cities with only one or two passengers.
This revelation has come out in a report by the Auditor General of Pakistan, which is based on the audit of PIA.
The audit report states that due to poor strategy, 816 flights were operated with only one passenger during the years 2021 to 2023, while 302 flights were operated with two passengers, bringing the total number of flights with fewer passengers to 1,118.
According to the audit report, this revelation was made during the audit of the years 2021 to 2023, which shows that this decision is an example of inefficient use of operational planning and resources, because despite the fewer passengers, the flights were canceled and the ticket money was refunded, instead of being operated.
The report also states that the PIA administration was contacted repeatedly to explain the reasons for this matter, but neither any response was received nor did the organization conduct any investigation on its own.
The audit report holds officials responsible for flight planning, network management and scheduling responsible for the entire matter, stating that due to poor planning and decision-making by the district manager, general manager and relevant officials, 1,118 flights were operated with very few passengers, and instead of cancelling the flights and refunding the ticket price, they were operated, which shows weaknesses in operational planning and cost management.
