New York: Zahran Mamdani, who has rapidly emerged in the New York City mayoral race, has become a national symbol that many Muslim Americans are proud of, while on the other hand, he is a metaphor for their political failure for right-wing American citizens.

South Carolina Republican Representative Nancy Mays posted a photo of Mamdani on social media, in which he is shown wearing a shalwar kurta, in reference to 9/11.
Far-right activist Laura Loomer claimed without evidence that “another 9/11 is going to happen in New York.”
Zahran Mamdani’s mayoral campaign is a significant event for the United States, and New York City in particular because the devastation of the 9/11 attacks and the subsequent rise in Islamophobia have exacerbated the plight of Muslims.
Yousef Chohood, a political scientist at Christopher Newport University, said, “It’s really symbolic.”
He said the campaign serves as a reminder of anti-Muslim discrimination, but also as a rallying cry for Muslim Americans “to lead this society forward.”
Politicians from both major parties have targeted Mamdani’s progressive politics and criticism of Israel. Conservatives have used religious attacks and anti-immigrant sentiment against him.
