India has condemned the breach of the security cordon during the visit of Foreign Minister S Jaishankar to London, saying that ‘Britain is expected to fulfill its diplomatic responsibilities.’

According to the British news agency Reuters, the Indian Foreign Ministry has described the protesters as ‘a small group of separatists and extremists.’

Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar was harassed and attacked in London on Thursday as he was leaving his car after attending an event at the Chatham House think tank.
A small group of protesters chanting slogans and waving flags of the Sikh separatist movement known as Khalistan gathered outside the Chatham House think tank where Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar was speaking.
A video circulating on social media shows a man breaking through a police cordon, running towards Jaishankar’s car and tearing down the Indian national flag in front of London police officers.
“We condemn the misuse of democratic freedoms by such elements. We expect the host government to fully discharge its diplomatic responsibilities in such matters,” Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement.
Britain said it “strongly condemns” the incident. ‘There is a right to peaceful protest but any attempt to intimidate, threaten or disrupt public events is ‘completely unacceptable.’

A British Foreign Office spokesman said: ‘We are fully committed to ensuring the safety of all our diplomatic guests in line with our international obligations.’

Police said no arrests had been made. A spokesman for London’s Metropolitan Police said: ‘(The protesters) were immediately stopped and removed by officers.’

S Jaishankar is on a six-day official visit to the UK from March 4-9, where the Indian foreign minister is scheduled to meet his British counterpart David Lammy and other senior officials.
