Brussels: The European Union has imposed a fine of 700 million euros on Apple and Meta for violating digital competition rules, which risks deeply angering US President Donald Trump.

According to the French news agency ‘AFP’, the risk of the fine further straining the already tense relations between the EU and Trump, as the two sides are negotiating a deal to avoid heavy US tariffs on the bloc.

The European Commission has fined Apple 500 million euros ($570 million) because the company prevented developers from driving users outside the App Store to access cheaper deals.

The European Union has also fined Meta €200 million for violating rules on the use of personal data on Facebook and Instagram.

The fines are imposed under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which came into force last year, forcing the world’s biggest technology companies to open up to competition in the EU.

The Commission has said that if Meta and Apple fail to pay the fines within 60 days, they could increase further.

The EU has strengthened its ‘legal arsenal’ over the past two years with twin major laws, the Digital Services Act and the DMA, but since Trump returned to the White House there have been concerns that the EU will refrain from implementing them.
