A Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt, Germany to Spain continued to fly without a pilot for 10 minutes, while the lone co-pilot in the cockpit was unconscious.

According to the German news agency DPA, the incident occurred on February 17, 2024, on a flight from Frankfurt to Seville, Spain.

According to the report, the 43-year-old captain of the plane had gone to the toilet when the 38-year-old co-pilot of the Airbus A321 fell unconscious.

The plane, carrying 199 passengers and six crew members, was in a state of uncontrolled flight for about 10 minutes.

The German news agency cited a report by the Spanish accident investigation agency CIAIAC as its source of information.

The pilot said that when he left the cockpit 30 minutes before the end of the flight, the co-pilot appeared to be “capable and alert.”

Lufthansa confirmed the incident and the subsequent investigation, saying that its internal flight safety department had also conducted a separate inquiry.

However, the airline refused to reveal the results of its investigation.

According to the report: “Although the unconscious co-pilot apparently unintentionally took control, the aircraft was able to continue flying stably thanks to the active autopilot.”
