Paris: A historic event has taken place in French politics when a Paris court sentenced former President and Prime Minister Nicolas Sarkozy to five years in prison.

This is the first time that a former French head of state has faced actual imprisonment.

Nicolas Sarkozy was accused of receiving illegal financial support from Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi during his 2007 presidential campaign.

According to the investigation, millions of euros were paid for Sarkozy’s election campaign from secret Libyan funds. The court has termed the case as “illegal election funding” and “criminal conspiracy”.

The court sentenced Sarkozy to five years in prison, including two years of suspended sentence and three years of actual imprisonment.

Sarkozy announced that he would appeal the verdict, but the court ordered that the sentence be carried out immediately.

On October 21, 2025, Sarkozy surrendered to authorities at the La Santé prison in Paris. He will reportedly be held in solitary confinement for his security.

Although some political analysts say the case is a symbol of the independence and transparency of France’s political and judicial institutions, analysts say the verdict will send a clear message to future politicians that corruption or illegal funding while in power can lead to imprisonment.
