Europe, fake threatening letters in the name of the Afghan Taliban revealed

Staff Reporter, Daily Dawn, Dawn TV Report

London: A recent report by the British newspaper The Telegraph has revealed that fake threatening letters in the name of the Afghan Taliban are being sold in Europe, which Afghan citizens are using as evidence to seek asylum in Western countries.

According to the report, some corrupt Afghan officials prepare such fake letters in exchange for money that also have the signature and seal of Taliban officials. These letters are submitted by refugees with their applications so that they can prove that their lives are in danger in Afghanistan.

During a sting operation, The Telegraph reporter bought such fake letters for 40 pounds (about 3,500 Afghanis) that allegedly contained “death threats” from the Taliban. These letters claimed that the person concerned had cooperated with the British government, so he would be punished.

Interestingly, these fake letters often include the name of the country where the asylum application is being made. The report also states that “premium” letters worth 200 pounds (about 17,500 Afghanis) are also being sold, which have a fake Taliban seal and signature, so that their chances of being approved are higher.

According to the report, this forgery is affecting the cases of genuine Afghan refugees. In 2022 alone, more than 100,000 Afghan citizens applied for asylum in the UK, many of whom were deemed suspicious.

A Taliban official told The Telegraph that some local Taliban members prepare such fake letters themselves, which is an illegal practice, and if caught, they face severe punishment.
