Lyon: A sad and provocative incident has occurred in the French city of Lyon where a man stole a copy of the Holy Quran from a mosque and burned it.
According to the foreign news agency AFP, the incident took place between the night of Sunday and Monday. According to the Council of Mosques of the Rhone Region, the suspect entered the mosque, stole a copy of the Holy Quran, burned it and fled.
Police have confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the incident, and a search for the suspect is underway. This incident has caused great anger among religious minorities in France, especially the Muslim community.
It should be remembered that France is the country with the largest Muslim population in Europe, while the Jewish community also lives here in large numbers.
On the other hand, a man in London was recently convicted by a court for desecrating the Holy Quran and fined £240 (approximately $325).
Critics have called the incident in London an unannounced revival of the blasphemy law that was repealed in England in 2008. The court ruled that the accused’s actions were deliberately provocative and based on hatred of religion.
