PARIS: The French parliament has removed Prime Minister François Bayrou’s government in a confidence vote after just nine months, leaving President Emmanuel Macron to find a new prime minister, plunging the country into a new political crisis.
François Bayrou, who took office just nine months ago, surprised even his allies when he decided to seek a confidence vote to end the deadlock on an austerity budget.
The budget includes savings of about 44 billion euros ($52 billion) to reduce France’s debt.

Bayrou is the first prime minister in modern French history to be removed from office by a vote of confidence rather than a motion of no confidence.

In the vote in the National Assembly, 364 members expressed no confidence in the government, while only 194 members expressed confidence in the government.

Bayrou was the sixth prime minister since President Macron was elected in 2017, but the fifth since 2022. His dismissal poses a new internal challenge for Macron at a time when he is leading diplomatic efforts on the war in Ukraine.
