Brussels: The European Union has released a list of 7 countries it considers ‘safe’, to speed up the return of migrants and make it difficult for citizens of these countries to obtain asylum in the bloc.

According to a report by the French news agency AFP, the list includes Kosovo, Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, India, Morocco, and Tunisia. However, the European Union needs to obtain the approval of the bloc’s parliament and members before implementing this measure.

The measure, which has been criticized by human rights organizations, will allow EU governments to process asylum applications filed by citizens of these countries quickly.

“Many member states are facing a large backlog of asylum applications, so anything we can do to speed up asylum decisions is very important,” says Magnus Brenner, the EU’s migration commissioner.
