Paris: French Prime Minister Sebastien Lacourne has resigned from office, which has been accepted by President Emmanuel Macron.

According to sources, Lacourne resigned just 26 days after assuming office. After François Bayrou failed to win a vote of confidence from parliament in September 2025, the government ended due to a vote of no confidence in parliament for the third time in France’s democratic history.

President Macron then nominated his close aide and the country’s Defense Minister, Sebastien Lacourne, as the new prime minister on September 10, 2025.
A few hours after the cabinet was announced, France’s new Prime Minister, Sebastien Lacourne and his government resigned on Monday. It became the shortest-lasting government in modern French history, resulting in a sharp decline in the stock market and the value of the euro.
According to Reuters, the sudden resignation was unexpected, coming at a time when allies and rivals had threatened to topple the new government.
Sébastien Lacourneau had been prime minister for just 27 days and his government lasted just 14 hours.

The far-right National Rally party has urged President Emmanuel Macron to immediately call new elections, while the left-wing party says President Macron must also go.
After weeks of consultations with all political parties, Lacourneau, a close ally of President Macron, selected his ministers on Sunday and their first meeting was scheduled for this afternoon.
According to the report, Lacourneau submitted his resignation to President Macron on Monday morning.
The Elysee Palace press office said that ‘Sébastien Lacourneau has sent his resignation to the president, which he has approved.’
